Thanks to the work of John Tynan of KJZZ public radio in Phoenix, we now have the start of a Gustav Alert on twitter. It's called GustavAlerts, and it'll be used to automatically send out government weather alerts related to Gustav. Right now it's just got one feed, and it needs tweaking, but we'll add more to it tomorrow as well.

The fact of the matter is that there isn't an ideal SMS system that readily available and not controlled by govt emergency agencies. But we're not trying to be first responders here anyway - this is for general public news consumption and should not be seen as primary tools for people in the field.

Vanessa,

I see your point.

It is possible to follow the GustavAlerts account on the web and not have these alerts sent to their phone.

Note, people are limited to receiving incoming messages: "you're limited to receiving 250 messages per week."
