friends?

I know this type of social network was not designed with disasters in mind, but with the case of Gustav info-sharing, shouldn't everyone who joins be automatically "friends" with everyone else?

I'm not seeking friendship but information, particularly local information. I have my group of NOLA bloggers/tweeters already, but other than refreshing the front page of this site, it's been difficult to hear from other new voices.
I hope that makes sense.
Because this group is likely to grow, it makes sense that we aren't all immediately "friends" with one another, but I'm just searching for the non-press releasey type of news.

I hesitate to think of the GIC as just another Ning group. We are using Ning to help coordinate and inform individuals, couples, families, friends about Hurricane Gustav.

This portal has the potential to make a BIG difference and positively impact peoples lives (and could even save lives). This is why we are here, not just to make new friends. I am certain that many of us will get to know each quite well here at the GIC and friendships will emerge. Our task at hand is to find ways to efficiently disseminate information about Gustav to help people make the right decisions to make their lives easier during Gustav visit. Our time here should be dedicated to this purpose. If we are simply seeking friendship there are many other opportunities for this, but now we need to focus at the task at hand.

no, because last time with the wiki there were literally 1000s! the info glut would be crippling! forming overlapping "friend" circles works much better should the worst come...

I agree with you! I see this on other NING groups where it is not automatic but I want and need the information. Praying all of our family, friends and anyone we know is safe. Thanks for adding me as a friend!
