Twitter helps provide short messages about what's happening, geotagged Flickr photos give visual info, but IMHO, the best tool allowing you and me to provide invaluable situational awareness to others and first responders is Qik, because it allows you to post video to the web as you shoot it.
Only a limited number of cameraphones currently work with Qik, so check whether it will work with your model, and, if it does, register now, download the Qik app to your phone, and practice now. Here's a Qik I did the other day about Qik in disasters.
